Mining & Tunnel Range
Underground communication systems perform a vital role in the safety & productivity in mining and tunneling operations, where modern underground operations use communication systems to enable secure voice communications, to locate both people and machines, remote control of vehicles and systems, mining operations automation, as well as site access and security. A crucial component of the underground communication system is the antenna; a specialized antenna can improve the wireless connectivity in such an environment.
Poynting have a long history of designing and supplying specialist antennas specifically for mining and tunnel communication systems in mines.
Poynting manufacture a complete WiFi and LTE range of antennas which are used in mines internationally. Of particular interest, is the circular polarised helical antenna range, called MinePoynt antennas. These antennas have gained significant popularity with our customers and have proven to substantially enhance RF propagation in these intense underground conditions, thereby complimenting the abilities of the connected LTE/WiFi/Mesh nodes and access point equipment.
Numerous customer tests in mines have been performed over the past 10 years showing MinePoynt antennas to achieve ranges 3x to 4x those obtained with a similar gain linear polarised antenna. Some initial tests in a South African coal mine demonstrated a person 1.2 km away from the access point fitted with a HELI-3 MinePoynt making perfect VoIP calls using a handheld WiFi phone. Customers reported numerous other tests done in SA gold mines and various Australian mines with similar performance.

5GHz Wi-Fi antennas
Poynting offers a new series of smaller HELI antennas, with medium to high gain uni-directional and bi-directional antennas. These antennas are suited for mining and other types of tunnels, where high performance connectivity is required, but a smaller physical size is desired. These antennas can be used in 2×2 MIMO configuration or as SISO antennas for backhaul Wi-Fi links, as well as Wi-Fi distribution into smaller cavities, such as the stopes. Our Mini-HELI range is equipped with both Right Hand and Left Hand Circular Polarised elements to provide the best MIMO performance possible.
HELI-5 & HELI-6Uni-directional LTE/LoRa/ISM Band Antennas
We are expanding this range by releasing two new HELI antennas: the HELI-5 for 1800/2100MHz LTE frequency bands and the HELI-6 for the 900MHz LTE frequency band which is particularly useful for LoRa/Sigfox and generic ISM 868/915MHz frequency band applications. These new MinePoynt (HELI) antennas are specifically designed for NB-IoT/LTE-M/LoRa/Sigfox for the reception of telemetry & sensor data, as well as other types of M2M, IoT and LTE underground coverage distribution. Both above HELI antennas can be used in mines to extend LTE and IoT (LoRa/Sigfox) coverage for staff communications, LTE-M, NB-IoT and also for M2M communication such as telemetry for real-time control and data reporting of the various machinery. HELI-8Bi-directional 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Antenna
The HELI-8 is effectively a double HELI-3 antenna, which radiates in both directions with a single connector port. This antenna operates in the 2.4GHz WiFi band and offers 14 dBi in either direction and is typically deployed in long underground tunnels where contiguous WiFi band coverage is required. The HELI-8 antenna is also available in IS specification if required.
HELI-3 & HELI-4Uni-directional 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Antennas
The HELI-3 & HELI-4 are both uni-directional 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band antennas, which are designed to be mounted against the mine face. These highly rugged antennas provide a significantly high gain for the most taxing tunnels and is fully IP65 protected. Intrinsically Safe (IS) options are also available for fiery mines and can be mounted against the coal face. The smaller of the two antennas, the HELI-4, measures 405mm long and offers 15dBi gain. The larger of the two antennas, the HELI-3, measures just over a meter long and provides 17.5dBi gain. Both of these antennas are typically suspended from the tunnel roof, and are designed to be fitted against the ceiling, cable trays or pipes.
The MIMO-3 series of antennas is designed for the transportation market, and is already fully weatherproof and suitable for marine applications. The MIMO-3 series of antennas provides a single antenna radome housing with a combination of LTE (450MHz – 3.8GHz), WiFi (2.4GHz & 5GHz) as well as GPS/GLONASS ports. The newly released version 2 of this antenna now offers a variety of mounting options ‘out of the box’.
A new series of antennas, the PUCK Series, are similar to the abovementioned MIMO-3 series, only much smaller. This antenna series will be released soon and boast multiple configurations of LTE (690MHz – 3.8GHz), WiFi (2.4GHz &5GHz) as well as GPS/GLONASS. The PUCK series is designed as a small profile, low gain antenna for the transportation & IoT market, which is fully weatherproof and ideal for smaller inland boats, buildings, buoys, and various onboard IoT applications.
Industrial Wi-Fi Range
The Poynting WLAN antenna range makes use of Poynting’s ability to design antennas which control the radiation patterns across both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies so that no pattern break up occurs which can compromise data transfer performance. These dual frequency Wi-Fi antennas can work with the latest dual band Wi-Fi modem equipment as well as legacy Wi-Fi installations and equipment which are still in operation. These antennas are Ideal for increasing system transmission reliability.
