Thuthisa Expands WiFi Hotspots in Zamdela Township: Empowering Connectivity with FibrePoynt

In an era where internet access is essential, FibrePoynt, in partnership with Thuthisa, has continued to bring affordable and reliable connectivity to underserved communities. In Zamdela Township, Thuthisa's efforts to install community WiFi Hotspots at local Spaza shops have transformed the digital landscape as part of Broadband Infraco’s national WiFi Hotspot rollout. What began as a modest network of five Access Points (APs) has now grown to 16, bringing essential online services closer to the community.

Scaling the Network: From 5 to 16 Hotspots

Originally, Thuthisa implemented five HomePoynt APs across strategic locations in the township. However, as the benefits of local connectivity became increasingly apparent, both the community and project leaders recognized the need for expansion. Today, Thuthisa has installed an additional 11 HomePoynts, bringing the total to 16 APs. These APs are interconnected through a robust network architecture, configured to optimize coverage, reduce interference, and ensure reliable connections even in dense urban settings.

Overview of the Installation

The entire system is built on an intelligent configuration of HomePoynts connected to three Master Nodes. The three Master Nodes—each equipped with advanced networking hardware—enable the efficient distribution of internet services across the township.

One master node, which manages 10 HomePoynt nodes, distributes high-speed data across the network. This enables efficient data management and routing.

The remaining HomePoynt nodes connect to the other two master nodes, depending on the line of sight. Remarkably, even when the nodes are positioned at various angles or behind the antenna, the network still maintains strong, reliable connections—demonstrating the flexibility and resilience of its design.

The connection topology is adapted by our system engineers based on the specific site conditions and topography. Factors such as terrain, building structures, and natural obstacles influence how the nodes are positioned and communicate within the network. Each network design is tailored to the unique characteristics of the area to ensure optimal performance. By adjusting the system to account for these environmental factors, we ensure consistent, high-speed data transmission despite the challenges posed by the landscape.

Additional Equipment & Software

The network is managed at the edge (where you connect to the backhaul) via a Core Node Lite. At its heart is the MikroTik RB4011, which hosts a RADIUS server to ensure security, authentication, and reliable access for all users.

Powerlynx hotspot management software provides efficient guest WiFi management, offering branded portals for Spaza shops and other venues, turning each location into a WiFi hotspot with potential for profit generation.

iBill has been integrated for ISP management, simplifying customer management, automating invoicing, and accurately tracking network usage for Home Routers. This helps provide robust support while maintaining efficient network operations.

Community Impact & Future Prospects

The success of this project demonstrates that even a small-scale installation can rapidly grow, delivering wide-reaching benefits to the community. Through these WiFi hotspots, residents of Zamdela Township now have access to affordable internet—a critical resource for education, work, and daily life. Additionally, local technicians have gained invaluable experience in network installation and configuration, adding to the skill base of the community.

As funding becomes available and the benefits become even more evident, further expansions are planned. #FibrePoynt, in collaboration with Thuthisa and Broadband Infraco, are committed to continuing this journey, empowering communities with connectivity that was once out of reach.
