The Geodrone unmanned vessel, communicates using POYNTING antennas

Cool Media Productions (CMP) is a professional production company based in Centurion, South Africa. Amongst other things they have an Outside Broadcast Trailer fully equipped with the latest in wireless and IP streaming technology that is ready for any sport or corporate event.

The Challenge

This customer approached POYNTING as they were very frustrated with trying to solve the communication issues with their streaming solutions. As they offer a mobile solution, they always make use of LTE or 4G or whatever mobile network coverage is available.

They are often streaming from remote locations and has have done remote broadcasts form golf events, live concerts, and conferences. To ensure consistent quality they rely on their own communication system and do not rely on the customer’s infrastructure.

CMP was contracted to do a live broadcast of a Conference at the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria. With their original router they were struggling with speeds of 1-2 Mbps which does not allow for live streaming, as you require at least a stable 10 Mbps connection.

The Solution

Pieter Prinsloo, suggested that they use the XPOL-24 Antenna (which has 4 antennas inside) in conjunction with two Teltonika RUTX12 Routers.

This is required as they do bonding between three Mobile Network Operators namely MTN, Telkom and Vodacom. The bonding service was supplied by Xpedite Technologies.

The Results

The speed test results speak for themselves. A download speed of 27 Mbps and an upload speed of 57 Mbps is more than sufficient for streaming.
