  • POYNTING Product:
    • 4 x OMNI-496: Dual-band Wi-Fi omni-directional antennas
    • 2 x OMNI-402: Ultra-wide-band LTE 2X2 MIMO omni-directional antennas

The Background

GEOxyz is a leading European service provider, focusing on Marine Site Investigation, Asset Integrity, and Terrestrial Surveys.

Their highly skilled personnel are supported by a fleet of dedicated survey vessels offering clients the most comprehensive range of solutions. They have a vessel for every survey.

The Geodrone 6800 is the latest addition to their drone fleet, designed for offshore conditions. With a 500kg payload capacity and high endurance, this robust vessel is an ideal multi-sensor platform for offshore survey activities.

Equipped with a moonpool for sensor installation, it offers versatility. The mission planning software enables efficient autonomous survey execution. The Geodrone 6800 can be a force multiplier for existing vessels or used standalone for nearshore work.

The Challenge

The Geodrone 6800 is an unmanned vehicle that needs reliable communication. It relies on a strong and consistent signal for effective remote manual navigation control, autopilot navigation control, and seamless data acquisition. Additionally, the drone needs a stable connection for smooth data exchange and efficient transfer of visual data captured by its CCTV system. Good signal is essential to ensure optimal performance and successful mission execution.

The Solution

To address the signal strength challenges, the GEOxyz decided on a solution consisting of six POYNTING Marine antennas. The configuration includes two OMNI-496 antennas on both the left and right sides, along with two OMNI-402 MIMO antennas placed in the middle.

These antennas have a superior pattern control over the entire frequency range making them true high performance omni-directional antennas. This is a crucial specification required for all marine antennas.

These antennas serve multiple purposes, including remote control of the drone vessel and the seamless transfer of sensor data and video images from the PTZ Camera.

To ensure reliable connectivity, an intelligent system is incorporated into the drone. This system continuously monitors the signal strengths of the Wi-Fi connection.

As soon as the signal becomes insufficient or unstable, the system automatically switches over to the 4G/LTE connectivity facilitated by the OMNI-402 antennas. This intelligent connectivity system guarantees a smooth transition between network options, maintaining a strong and consistent connection throughout the drone’s operations.

The Result

With the implementation of the robust marine antenna solution, the Geodrone 6800 is capable of effortlessly achieving its specified connectivity range of up to 3000m.
