Jeffreys Bay annually hosts the Corona Open J-Bay 2023 as part of the World Surfing League’s Championship Tour. This event stands as the biggest international surfing competition, drawing the finest surfers from around the world to the Eastern Cape coastline to tackle some of the planet’s best waves.

In the surfing realm, Jeffreys Bay is renowned for Supertubes, acclaimed as one of the top five right-hand breaks globally. While Supertubes offers an ideal setting for surfing, it doesn’t extend its generosity to internet connectivity! Just weeks before the event, the organizers realised that surfers could not receive live scores from onshore judges via their new Apple Watches due to bad signal.

Rayne Nell, a partner at Inteto Connect based in Port Elizabeth, was approached by the organizers to tackle this challenge! Ray implemented the WilsonPro A1000 signal booster and 2 x LPDA-92 antennas to establish an optimal signal angle for the surfers. The WilsonPro A1000 serves as a high-performance signal booster designed to amplify cellular signals, while the LPDA-92 antennas are specifically engineered for transmitting signals with enhanced gain and directional coverage.

Through the strategic installation of the WilsonPro A1000 and the LPDA-92 antennas they optimized signal reception for the Apple Watches worn by the surfers. The signal booster effectively amplified the weak signals and transmitted them in a focused direction, improving connectivity and ensuring seamless communication throughout the competition.

The Result

The implementation of the signal-boosting solution has proven to be a resounding success at the ‘Corona Open JBay 2023’ competition in Jeffreys Bay. The enhanced signal reception facilitated real-time scoring updates for the surfers, enabling them to receive immediate feedback from the judges after each wave. The reliable communication channel established by our signal-boosting technology has elevated the overall event experience and contributed to the accuracy and efficiency of the scoring system.
