Seamless Connectivity at Sea for Energy Maritime Operations.

The energy sector relies on various marine vessels; Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs) transport personnel and supplies to offshore platforms, research vessels contribute to scientific studies for sustainable energy practices, specialized cable-laying vessels connect offshore wind farms, and tankers transport oil and LNG.Tugboats handle the movement of large structures, and fishing vessels coexist with energy operations.
This maritime diversity underscores the critical role vessels play in supporting both traditional and renewable energy efforts in the region. An internet connection is essential for any vessel, from real-time weather updates and navigation information to email and video conferencing, the internet plays an important role in keeping people and systems connected and up-to-date. Additionally, data-intensive applications such as remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, vessel tracking, infotainment systems, and video applications drive the need for better internet on board. Maintaining a reliable broadband connection at sea can be a significant challenge.

This is where EMCOM and Speedcast excels. They provide an onshore and offshore solution, in their LTE/4G offerings for vessels in the energy sector. Their dual-sim solution allows for seamless connectivity in the dynamic maritime environment. It is more cost-efficient, improves redundancy and reliability and optimise performance when compared to other solutions.

Dynamic Positioning (DP) Rigs present unique challenges, given that these vessels or platforms constantly change their position relative to the land where cellular towers are situated. They are equipped with automated systems, including thrusters or propellers, crucial for maintaining precise position and heading in offshore operations like oil and gas exploration and marine energy projects.

Comprehensive LTE or 5G antenna coverage across a DP rig’s full 360 degrees is critical for seamless offshore operations, ensuring constant, high-speed communication for precise navigation, safety protocols, emergency responses, and efficient remote monitoring.

The Speedcast solution consist of 3 Junction Boxes that include CELERWAY Arcus routers. Connected to these are 2 x POYNTING XPOL-2 4G/5G Antennas, as well as 4 x POYNTING Omni-493 antennas.

The XPOL-2-5G is a Cross Polarised (XPOL), cellular band, 2×2 MIMO antenna and is suitable for 2G, 3G, 4G & 5G.

The OMNI-493 is an ultra-wideband, high performance, marine and coastal antenna that covers the contemporary 4G/LTE and future 5G operating frequencies with excellent balanced gain across all frequencies.

The image below gives an overview of the reliability of the system with 100 % connectivity and 99% good quality connectivity over the more than 17 days measured.
